F.A.Q.'s

WHAT IS A 'COMBINED THERAPY' SESSION? David is fully qualified and highly experienced in a wide range of complementary therapies. As well as delivering 'single therapy' sessions of treatments such as acupuncture, over his 25 years of professional practice David has developed a unique system of combining a range of therapies as part of a single treatment session. These therapies can be combined to suit the individual needs of each patient and provide a much more powerful treatment package. Therapies that can be used in our unique ‘Combined Therapy' sessions can include: acupuncture, Chinese herbs, counselling, hypnotherapy, personal coaching, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), meditation, Qi Gong healing, and therapeutic Tui’na massage. David can also create ‘Personalised Guided Meditation CD’s’ for you as part of these sessions. WHO HAS ACUPUNCTURE? Many people use acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or conditions. Others choose acupuncture as a preventive measure to strengthen their constitution or because they just feel generally unwell or 'run down'. Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages, including babies, children and the elderly and it can also be very effective when integrated with conventional medicine. HOW CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP ME? Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of illnesses and symptoms, from clearly defined complaints to more general feelings of ill health and low energy. Visit the 'Acupuncture' page of our 'Therapy Library' to find out more about how acupuncture can help you. WHAT HAPPENS AT A FIRST CONSULTATION? Your initial consultation will have give you an opportunity to meet David and discuss your needs, expectations and any concerns you may have. David will make an professional assessment of your condition and introduce his therapies and unique approach to you - you will also receive an acupuncture treatment as part of this session. [SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE INFORMATION] You are under no obligation to book further sessions. David will always encourage you to first go home and see whether you notice any improvement in your condition after this introductory consultation, and also to consider if his treatment style would suit you. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY FIRST CONSULTATION? Most patients will start to feel some improvement or positive change in their condition after their first session. This can be immediately after a session or up to a few days later, and will vary according to the individual and the condition being treated. It is our policy that you are always in control of your sessions with us. If, once you have had time to review your initial consultation, you would like to book further sessions please contact Alex Greenbank our Practice Manager to arrange future session times to suit you. You can call or text Alex on 07941 619448, or alternatively email her at: peakhousepractice@live.co.uk When you contact us to rebook Alex will take your details for our Practice records (home address, telephone and e-mail address if you have one, as well as date of birth). These details are needed for insurance purposes and will remain confidential. HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED? Every patient is unique so the number of treatment sessions required will vary. More straightforward physical problems, such as recent aches and sprains, can normally be dealt with in 1 - 4 sessions. If you have more historic or complex physical or emotional issues these can take longer to work with and so we will normally advise that you book a block of four treatment sessions after your initial session. These four sessions will then allow sufficient time for you judge if significant improvement and progress has been achieved. On the last of your four sessions David will then review and discuss progress with you and whether your expectations have been met. If further sessions are required this will be agreed with you and another review date set. This system of booking means you remain in full control of your treatment package at all times and that the treatments never become ‘open ended’. For the first block of 4 sessions we normally recommend that you book 1 session every week over a month long period if possible. This allows for continuity of treatment and keeps the ‘healing momentum’ going to ensure a speedier improvement in your health and wellbeing. If you need further sessions after this first block of 4 sessions then you may choose to move to fortnightly or monthly sessions, depending on your progress - David can advise you on this. WILL MY PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE COVER ME? David is fully qualified and a member of the British Acupuncture Council so in most cases you will be able to claim 50% of the fees back for acupuncture treatments. WHTA HAPPENS IF I NEED TO CANCEL OR CHANGE AN APPOINTMENT? We can rearrange or cancel any appointment you are unable to attend - please just contact Alex who will be happy to help you with this. Ideally we need at least 24 hours notice of cancellation or change of an appointment as this will give us time to offer your slot to another patient on our waiting list. ‘No shows' or cancellations less than three hours before an appointment will usually be charged at the full price. WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE FEEL LIKE? Most people find acupuncture to be very relaxing. Patients often describe the needle sensation as a tingling or dull ache. This is one of the signs the body's 'Qi', or vital energy, has been stimulated. I'M SCARED OF NEEDLES - CAN I STILL HAVE ACUPUNCTURE? Acupuncture needles are much finer than the needles used for injections and blood tests. You may not even feel them penetrate the skin and, once in place, they are hardly noticeable. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE AN ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT SESSION? Try not to have a large meal within an hour of your appointment as the process of digestion will alter the pattern of your pulse, and you may also need to lie on your stomach for the treatment. You should also avoid alcohol and food or drink that colours your tongue such as coffee or strong tea. It is a good idea to wear loose-fitting clothes so that the acupuncture points, especially those on your lower limbs, are easily accessible. HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A TREATMENT? You are likely to feel relaxed and calm. If the treatment has been particularly strong you may feel tired or drowsy and it is worth bearing this in mind if you plan to drive or use any other machinery soon afterwards. ARE THERE ANY UNPLEASANT SIDE EFFECTS? Acupuncture has virtually no unpleasant side effects. Any that do occur are mild and self-correcting. Occasionally there may be minor bruising at the needle point or a short-term flare-up of your symptoms as your Qi clears and resettles. SHOULD I TELL MY DOCTOR I AM RECEIVING TREATMENT? If you are currently receiving treatment from your doctor it is sensible to mention that you plan to have acupuncture. David will need to know about any medication you are taking as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment.
